I have a wildlife pond - about 5 years old, l5 x 8 x 3ft deep. It has not been clear this year, lot of dirt and blanket weed etc. I have used barley straw - no effect. Can anyone advise me should I clean it. I have a net I take things out daily, all the gunge, but it doesnt look good. I have plants in the pond - a lot. Should I get a pond cleaner or something.
I am at a loss as to know what to do.

Hi Pan,

Thank you for your post.

My advice is that you should definitely be cleaning your pond. If possible add a pond skimmer and a Biological filter. These will help keep your pond clean longer. Wild life ponds are a little more difficult to clean.

I realize adding filters will definitely disrupt the ecosystem of the pond. However, it sounds like not much is happening at the moment anyhow except for some guck?

Here's a link to some cleaning instructions. http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0302/pond_clean.asp

I'll be honest and tell you that it will take some work to clean your wildlife pond, however it just might be time to do it.
